It's Babe Ruth Day! During the 1926 World Series, Ruth delivered on his promise to hit a home run for a boy who had been seriously injured in an accident. Little Johnny Sylvester recovered and later became an officer in the U.S. Navy, commanding a submarine chaser in the Pacific.

...The Babe was the definition of larger than life, in so many ways. There's still a bit of controversy over his 'called shot' on 1 Oct 32 at Wrigley Field.

For our friends who may not know this story, Babe came up to bat up against the Cubs, score tied 4-4. The Cubs bullpen - hell, the entire crowd - was jeering him unmercifully and Babe gave it right back - but it looked like it might be working, because the Cubs' pitcher quickly ran up two balls and two strikes. At that point, Ruth gestured towards center field with two fingers.

The Cubs players would swear for the rest of their days that Babe was telling the crowd that he had two strikes but he still had one left. Ruth always said that he was telling the Cubs that he was hitting one to center field, and they'd better be ready.

And that was exactly where he hit it, dead solid perfect into the center field seats.

Larry McMurtry’s epigraph in The Last kind Words Saloon:

“I had the great director John Ford in mind when I wrote this book; he famously said that when you had to choose between history and legend, print the legend. And so I’ve done.”

Jem,

May it always be so.
