The beaches the Marines landed on in 1945 are now 50ft higher due to volcanic uplift. in the past couple of years there have been small eruptions just offshore that have created temporary islets. Iwo has always been an active volcano but it seems its getting a little more active. Could it lead to something more or bigger? Uncertain but it will be interesting to watch.

Iwo Jima is building to what will eventually be another caldera-forming eruption. At least on the scale of Hunga Tonga-Hunga Ha'apai. That has the potential to produce potentially devastating tsunamis given the relative proximity of the Tokyo region to the volcano. That is probably a very long while off however.

What is notable about the recent eruptions is that they have seen the first juvenile magma produced at the volcano in a very long time. Previous eruptions have been purely phreatic in nature for centuries.

Volcano Cafe added a new entry to the Iwo Jima files. There has been more steam eruptions on the edges of the caldera this year. Possibility of a BIG boom in the VEI 6 or 7 range.

7: 1815 eruption of Mount Tambora or Mount Mazama/Crater Lake.
