I thought DOD didn't want a warrior culture of generational military service since it was too monochromic.

Or even just got some clip art of WW2 soldiers walking away without knowing who they were.
Less charitably, it's someone pissed off about not being able to fly Confederate flags any more so decided to support another enemy of the United States .

I know US helmets can be confused from certain angles with those German ones, but the US never used cylindrical containers like the Germans.
