A pyroclastic flow is a fast-moving current of hot gas and volcanic matter capable of reaching speeds up to 700 km/h. This is the flow originated by the Unzen volcano during its 1991 eruption.

How do you spot volcanologists and tsunami specialists ? They always park facing road exit, to shave vital seconds off departure...
( One reason Kath & I would scoff at disaster movies where 'experts' gotta back out of bay with screech of tyres... )
IIRC, there's story from Montserrat of guy who regularly hiked up to ridge in 'danger' zone to see what the volcano was doing. There'd been some lesser and middling pyroclastic flows, but those stayed in lower part of valley, well below ridge. This day, the volcano belched a whopper, over-filling the upper valley.
Guy fled. Not with hope of survival, more that his body would be found, rather than totally consumed / buried.
Remarkably, this nuée ardente sorta settled back into valley, roared past on very brim of ridge, completely missing him...

Girl scouts are trained to do the exact same thing. Back into parking at all events, so that departure is simplified in the case of emergency.
