Poseidon Down....
...A P-8 skidded off the end of the runway at Kaneohe Bay yesterday and is in the water. Nine crew aboard, all well.

THat's going to be a pricey fix.
Question - Since the line is still going, would it be cheaper/faster to just build a new one, and use this one for some kind of testing?

That thing ain't ever flying again. Category 2 strike from the roster.Belushi TD wrote: ↑Tue Nov 21, 2023 11:44 am THat's going to be a pricey fix.

Maintenance Administration is going to have a LOT of work for a while. Bring me the head of the aircraft commander!

Based on that picture there's no fixing that, the airframe is totaled.Belushi TD wrote: ↑Tue Nov 21, 2023 11:44 am THat's going to be a pricey fix.

Yup, all the expensive stuff got submerged.gtg947h wrote: ↑Tue Nov 21, 2023 12:32 pmBased on that picture there's no fixing that, the airframe is totaled.Belushi TD wrote: ↑Tue Nov 21, 2023 11:44 am THat's going to be a pricey fix.

Yeah, salt water is extremely hard on equipment. I doubt that bird or much of what's inside will ever fly again.

Pick it up, put it ashore, clean the equipment as best they can, pull the wings, and it's the new ground based simulator.
That's only about $200 million in the drink. The AF Navy may have to close a golf course.

Re: Poseidon Down....
Why did both of them loose their nosecone? Is it designed to be breakaway, or is that where they keep the radar and its made of fiberglass and therefore much weaker than the rest of the airframe?

Re: Poseidon Down....
It's the latter. They're basically fiberglass shells designed to deflect air, be transparent to radar, and not come off if they get hit by a bird. A nice wall of water is going to totally wreck it.Belushi TD wrote: ↑Wed Nov 22, 2023 12:23 pm Why did both of them loose their nosecone? Re: Poseidon Down....
Having looked at the various pictures a fair bit, it seems to me that the majority of the expensive stuff is in the fuselage, right? The computers and such things? It looks like that part is water tight, considering how high in the water the P-8 is floating.
Ok, the engines are shot because I assume they went into the water with full reverse thrust on, and so is the wiring controlling the flaps and rudder (maybe rudder?) as they are obviously underwater, but the rest of it? What are we talking about here? Or am I entering finger breaking territory?

Re: Poseidon Down....
You're assuming it stayed water tight after hitting.
If there's anything worth salvaging they probably will, but with the airframe shot it's not worth trying to get the whole thing.

Re: Poseidon Down....
Depends on what was energized when it hit the water. It’s entirely possible they’ll be able to salvage a large part of the electronics systems.
Re: Poseidon Down....
Pretty much this. As part of my day job I've been involved in some salvage/"what do we do after (fill in the blank) happened to my airplane?" events. Components that stayed dey will be salvageable; structure, engines, and anything else immersed in saltwater will probably be written off. It's not so much that you know it's ruined, more that you probably don't have the data to say it's good after such an event.Drunknsubmrnr wrote: ↑Sat Nov 25, 2023 1:37 am Depends on what was energized when it hit the water.
