So I see that SIG has got an interesting 7.62 round out:
The data is from the manufacturer of course, but if it is correct it looks like an upgrade over a standard round. Both in terms of trajectory, penetration, and weight. No idea what it costs though.
It would have to be something vaguely along the lines of a +P version but still one that can be fired by existing 7.62*51/.308 rifles because if not, might was well get a 6.5 Creedmoore if you need a new rifle. Or modify it quite a bit.
A more sensible approach to defeating body armor than 6.8*51?
