1) Descended from former Greek Forces in Cyprus. Specially trained for international and peacekeeping operations. Formed in response to instability in Albania. Comprising a single reinforced battalion and supporting elements.

Author Notes

Greek-Turkish Border Reductions
* 21st Infantry Regiments withdrew from XVI Infantry Division (it had four infantry regiments). Regiment reformed around Athens as 21st National Defense Brigade with the principal role of the defense of Athens.
* 50th Infantry Brigade moved from D Corps to A Corps and converted to a Mechanized Brigade.

Aegean Force Reductions
* 23rd Infantry Regiments withdrew from 96th Military Command (Chios) and reformed on the mainland as a reserve regiments under the XI Infantry Division. XI Division previously only had one infantry regiment.
* 36th Infantry Regiments withdrew from 98th Military Command (Lesbos) and reformed as the 36th Air Assault Brigade under First Army.
* The Military Commands on the Aegean Islands were reduced to 1-2 active infantry battalions supported by a single 18-gun 105mm artillery battalion, plus whatever National Guard units existed on the islands. 2/3 of the 105mm guns are crewed by reservists. All armor and other artillery was withdrawn to the mainland.

Fortress Commands
Aside from caretaker / maintenance troops, these units are composed almost exclusively of older reserve troops.

32nd Marine Brigade
* Converted one of the three marine battalions to Reserve, but added a battalion of AAV7s provided as part of a US aid package.

Artillery
* Significant quantities of older artillery are held in reserve. Some guns have not seen the light of day in years. Others are assigned to low readiness reserve artillery units, but those units rarely drill and would take some time to mobilize.

Armor
Significant quantities of M48s are held in reserve, both modernized M48A5MOLFs and older M48s. In theory, many of the M48A5MOLFs are assigned to low readiness reserve tank units, but those units rarely drill and would take some time to mobilize.

AUTHOR NOTES
In 1997, the Greek Air Force was in the midst of a major modernization effort, the centerpiece of which was the acquisition of modern long-range, multi-role fighters that would enable the Greek Air Force to contest the Turkish Air Force over Cyprus. The Greek Air Force and Ministry of Defense selected an F-15E derivative, the F-15H. The elected government tentatively approved the selection of the F-15H, but final approval and a firm order were tied up in wrangling over a larger military aid package the Greeks were seeking from the United States. As negotiations dragged into 1998, geopolitics intervened and rendered the F-15H issue moot. Following the rapprochement with Turkey, the Greek government didn’t quite declare “peace in our time”, but certainly took the opportunity to cut the defense budget - including the requirement which spawned the F-15H.

The F-15H was not the only program to fall to the budgetary knife. A tentative plan to update the surviving Mirage F-1s into a dedicated anti-shipping platform and consolidate the fleet into a dedicated maritime attack squadron was also canceled. This left the anti-ship role in the hands of a single Mirage 2000 squadron with Exocet missiles. The Mirage F-1 soldiered on until 2003 when it was replaced by the Eurofighter Typhoon.

One program that did not fall victim to the Greco-Turkish Peace Dividend was an F-4 upgrade known as Peace Icarus 2000. In cooperation with DASA, HAI upgraded the Greek F-4 fleet to something similar to the West German ICE upgrade - AN/APG-65 radar, AIM-120 and AIM-9M capability, and the full family of Paveway LGBs.

A modernization and expansion of the Mirage 2000 fleet was “deferred”, this time due to rising costs of the 2004 Olympics. The Program would have seen the acquisition of 15 new Mirage 2000-5s with MICA AAMs and SCALP cruise missiles, and the gradual upgrade of the original Mirage 2000s to 2000-5 standard.

The F-16C/D-52+ are equipped with conformal fuel tanks. The F-16D-52+ aircraft are fully combat capable with the rear seat configured for a WSO.

The Eurofighter Typhoon, or Tyfónas in Greek service, comprises two squadrons equipped with Trance 1 aircraft and are focussed on air defense with only minimal air-to-ground training. Two additional squadrons, this time of Trance 3 aircraft, are included in long-range planning with acquisition in the 2008-2010 timeframe to replace the A-7E.
