One of several designs to satisfy the need for more air-capable escorts: a Flight Deck Spruance, proposed by Bath Iron Works in Maine. The need for more AEGIS cruisers was felt to be a higher priority.

The Ayatollah’s Gift to the USN… we needed something like a dozen of them…

What could it carry, a small harrier with ASW mix

It would be a very expensive way to get a small Harrier capability.

The idea was to have 4-6 ASW helos (SH-2 and later, SH-60).

If there’s a similar shot of F-4J(UK) aircraft, then substitute that and it would work as a shot of the 74 Sqn aircraft that flew with the 335th TFS around the time of Operation BOLO II…

Lordroel, that’s a nice one, but current canon has the 48th TFW be recalled to the US to fight in the Eastern Theater along the Mississippi River and following those forces during PRAIRIE FIRE until the end of the war, getting at least partially shot out of F-111s, with Grumman A-6E(TRAM) Intruders being issued in an attempt to make good the losses.

I know we had this discussions before, but you mentioned they are only based there when needed and also it is mentioned in the universe that F-111s did strike the Soviet Union, could it be it is just a strike mission with them landing, using the RAF base for this operation.

Could it be like a Shuttle bombing like what the Americans/British did in WW II.
