The TL:DR of the reason why is that the story needed to move forward. My opinion was that I was getting stale, even if you kind people were still enjoying it. There will be stories that fill the gaps, though not all written by me.

I don't give up hastily, and 21 years is hasty for me.

Leaving some of the 'interim ground' open for future interpretation is a good strategy. If you had any broad brush lane ropes you wished to put in place, one way of doing them would be through snippets of a television programme or mini-extracts from future books; slapping those in at the beginning of chapters can be a small way of working in little ideas without feeling stale. They may be of the "As you know, Rick, this, that and the other happened here and there" character, but not all expository dumps are wicked.

I can sympathise with feeling like writing grows stale, or that you've written yourself into a bit of a corner. Sometimes a change of character or narrative voice can work, or at least flow easier.

Is there a sense, in-universe, that the armistice will hold, or is it seen as tenuous? Or, as a third option, is that a plot point that might play out?

Look at Jan‘s fact file about fixed defences in TLW. He keeps mentioning The Pause(tm) [tm added by yours truly] in that one. It seems to fit the 'new' chapter quite handily.
There was also mention in a fact file of NZ armored formations serving in Germany. And you have to train those on their new trunk tractors. The timeframe seems about right.

I THINK and hope that‘s where Europe is now, situation wise.

The Kiwis will be bringing their most fearsome weapon - The Bob Semple tank! Imagine a fleet of these incredible machines advancing across the European plain! Enough to instil fear in any Soviet soldier!





Although, given what it was designed to do, maybe the Bob Semple Tank was not that bad a design.
