I am not sure how I feel about that....
Yes, the Marines (and others, if I am not mistaken) did some stellar work there, but the entire war was closer to a feces fest than anything else.
Do we have any ships named after Vietnam battles?
Belushi TD
We’ve fought a lot of feces-fest wars lately. Arguably Korea and Vietnam fit that category, and USS HUÉ CITY and USS CHOSIN commemorate awful struggles similar to Fallujah.
If anything, it’s Gulf War I that’s missing a ship commemorating it.
About the only battle I can think of is Battle of 73 Easting.
Medina Ridge

That was mostly Army. We don’t name Navy ships for Army battles!
USS Yorktown (CV-5) and USS Yorktown (CV-10) are named after a land battle.
USS Ticonderoga (CV-14) was named after a land battle.
USS Bunker Hill (CV-17) was named after a land battle.
USS Antietam (CV-36) was named after a land battle.
Shall i keep going.
I was joking…….
So was i, was thinking of adding presidents who served in the army to the list, but that would kill what i wanted to say.

We could debate Nixon.
Other Navy Presidents - JFK, Ford, Bush the Elder
Would TR being a former SecNav be a Navy or Army dude?

Lots of Roosevelts were Asst SECNAV. TR’s son, and FDR.
Just like JOHN S. McCAIN, USS ROOSEVELT covers a multitude of sins.

Why not stick with states, counties, cities, towns and previously-distinguished ships? It’s worked with us for the last 400 years.

True, but finding Marine battles worthy of a ship name might be the issue.
USS
Kuwait International Airport doesn't exactly roll off the tongue.
Khafji was mostly fought by Arab allies with Marine support.
USS Khafji and USS Kuwait City would be good ones, IMO.
Concur. It’s hard to remember thirty odd years on, but we absolutely didn’t expect the absolute debacle for the Iraqis that was Desert Storm. We expected to take serious losses.
Thankfully, we were a lot better than we thought we were, and the Iraqis a lot worse.
Johnnie Re;Desert Storm 1, Best "Fn" war I ever had. Being with the SBU's on Coronado we were part of the original Speed Bump for Desert Shield.
The basket Screw Nam was my first war and Tet was my first real fight.
My most personally fulfilling Op was Prime Chance. Our opponents were mainly Swedish-built Boghammers and Boston whaler-type craft, used by the Pasdaran (Revolutionary Guards spit) to attack commercial shipping or lay mines, and Iranian oil platforms used as observation posts. The Pasdaran’s favored tactic for attacking ships was to swarm around a target and shoot at the vessel’s bridge and superstructure with 107 mm rockets, RPG-7 rocket-propelled grenade launchers, and machine guns. The intent was not so much to sink as to inflict as much damage as possible on the ship and crew. I really hate those Pasdaran goat screwers. I got to kill quite a few of them up close and personal. Even got to take one out with my M-1911A1 ACP. I especially liked it when their boats caught fire; served the butchering bastards right to burn.
Sort of a salve for my soul so to speak. But that's just me I'm funny that way.
Anyone here got a problem with that? well your just going to have to live with it!

Can’t much blame you for that. Seeing that kind of wanton cruelty tends to make a man angry. Enjoying bad people reap the whirlwind of their poor life choices or karma being a bitch is quite normal.
