I feel for you going through all that. I fought similar battles with my mother. Watching her personality disappear over the course of about three years was awful.

Twelve days later, and gradually worsening problems for my mom, turns out it wasn’t gallstone problems after all but a gastrointestinal perforation of the small intestine. So she’s having surgery during the night. Not that great.

The ER did let my dad stay there this time so I had time to arrive and take care of him which is a plus.

Mine is going in for an operation to rebuild her eardrum, it turns out that she’s been mostly deaf for a long time and just didn’t realise that her hearing just shouldn’t be the way it was. Not an emergency as with yours, but still it’s another <something>…

Yeah there’s a lot of ”something” when they get up to that age.

Well she might manage to dodge surgery, surgeon thinks the perforation might heal on its own with the aid of antibiotics. So wait and see in a hospital bed now. Would be good if major surgery can be avoided.

COVID restrictions? There are places that still have those?

I had actual COVID in when I was in hospital. Only restrictions were that staff wore masks when in my room and I was asked to wear one if I left the room for any reason.

I'm seeing more people wearing cloth masks. Also I'm seeing signs saying people should wear masks in this store. Most people are ignoring that one.

I thought the US CDC said cloth mask didn't work?

It's still a thing in some places and situations. In the last almost decade and a half I've helped out my late father's "special friend" (she would've become my stepmother, but she turned dad's proposal down). Last September she went into an assisted living facility at the ripe young age of 100. In late November she turned 101. In mid-March one of her nieces texted me that she had come down with COVID. It was running rampant among patients and staff in the facility. For the next two weeks only immediate family could visit patients. I was able to visit her one week later and like everyone else I was required to wear a mask. That requirement was lifted about one to two weeks later.

Only hospitals here who have some restrictions, and to be honest I think that to an extent it’s an excuse to be able to limit the amount of family that accumulates there. There’s been some increasing issues with that over the past decade.

You weren’t required to ring a bell? What the hell kind of progressive Scottish medicine is this?

So an update again, this has been a ride.

First we had a twist. It was an intestinal perforation, caused by not one but two gallstones travelling through the intestines. And initially lodged in a semi-complicated spot for surgery. Disagreement between surgeons, have a go at it now or wait and see if it moves to a better location where surgery would be easier? More junior surgeons wanted to have a go right away, senior wanted to wait. More and more surgeons get involved, very unusual case they say. So she waited, and general condition got better to the point that on Saturday they sent her home to wait with a catscan scheduled for Yesterday, to see how the situation was then.

On Tuesday she’s in too much pain to manage and had to take her into the ER, pain management, wait for the catscan and go home again. So yesterday morning took her into the hospital for the scan, back home again. In the afternoon surgeon calls and tells her to get into the ER right away, gallstones moved, intestinal blockage, things not good at all. So in she goes, gets admitted and medicated and all the tubes going everywhere again.

This morning half a dozen surgeons have a pow wow to evaluate and then explain the situation. Gallstones now in much worse location, surgery will be complicated. But there’s no choice. She’ll get some more medication treatment over the weekend and then planned for surgery on Monday by a team headed up by not one but two Consultants, because the surgery is so complicated and expected to be lenghty in duration.

So, I guess to sum it up, things aren’t going very good.
