Re: The people stuck using ancient Windows computers
I *feel* for such...
I can effectively upgrade neither of my two big PCs, this custom CAD-Tower and its companion 'Render Box', from Win #10 to Win#11.
Yes, both have the 'secure' socket for dongles, both could comply.
I dare not fit such lest #11 just installs itself.
Snag is I do not want the 'overheads' #11 would enforce.
Worse, the specialist 'CGI' Nvidia driver for my dual graphics cards, each driving two displays, is not entirely compatible with #11...
How badly ?
Last time I looked, 'extensively'.
Unto 'UNSUPPORTED'
I have #10 'tamed and tethered': Edge etc slapped down, Bing corralled, all efforts by 'Office' etc etc to cyber-squat my systems thwarted.
I dread 'Tuesday Updates', which often take my T-Bird e-mail off-line pending another re-boot.
My Google Chrome browser does what I want, how I want it. No more, no less, and no zoo off accessory apps.
I am not entirely happy with my Norton's firewall, given it tries too hard to sell itself, especially around the Spring renewal date, but I trust it rather more than Windows' own offering, and far more than eg {Spit!} McAfee's
Um, remember Bill Gates promised #10 was the last, best hope for PCs, and subsequents would be patches, not whole new versions ? Of course, soon as he stepped away, #11 came along, flaws and all.
As I see it, I reckon I can hold on until #12 has been out a year or so, had the early-uptakers clean it up.
If I'm still around, and my eyes / wits still work, I should be able to afford entirely new PCs to run #12, with new Mobos, drives, displays etc etc...

If you cannot see the wood for the trees, deploy LIDAR.

I like the terms in the article
“Ancient”
“Primordial”
Etc
Just what I need to read talking about the “ancient” systems that I upgraded to….

Re: The people stuck using ancient Windows computers
I do know of an PC with Windows 2000 that the motherboard fried and they hand built the new PC and cloned the drive. I guess they did it not so much about replacing a $8 million instrument it was attached to the cost and trouble to dig the machine out of the bunker it was built it, replacing it, and rebuilding the bunker.
