Denmark relinquishes claim to Sweden

Post by Micael »

So Denmark’s King Frederik has approved of a new royal coat of arms. From the Swedish perspective the most noteworthy bit is that he decided to remove the Swedish three crowns that Denmark has kept in the coat of arms since the days of the Kalmar union in the 14th-16th centuries. They’ve kept it as a visible symbol that Denmark doesn’t accept that Sweden is not under the rule of the Danish monarch and that they claim it (or it was originally). It took them a while to come to realization of the realities of the situation but we knew that they’d get there eventually. ;)

The stated reason is:
The coat of arms with the three crowns has been removed from the coat of arms, as it no longer has a current character and is therefore not considered relevant.
Old one to the left, new one to the right. You see the three yellow crowns on a blue background in the old one:

It’s a ”wild man”: https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wild_man
It appears in various heraldry in Europe.

The people of Skåne is generally very pro-Danish, and see themselves as semi-Danish. The Danes however tends to not see it that way, which is amusing. I don’t think many Danes would want it back, for several reasons.
