FNC Big Weekend Show had segment on liberals threating to move overseas. One reporter talked to NY Students. They also talked to two Albanian students. They mentioned if people know how corrupt it was overseas, they weren't leave the US.

That is not a uniquely Democrat/Liberal problem. Reminds me of Republicans wanting to leave for Australia when Obama was POTUS.jemhouston wrote: ↑Mon Nov 18, 2024 1:41 am FNC Big Weekend Show had segment on liberals threating to move overseas. A country with universal healthcare, tight weapons laws, a comprehensive tax code, a cabinet member being openly gay and a few other things…
Personally, I would not visit Albania if you gave me money.

I think Obama's election was when I got my passport. It was mainly the fact I was getting tired of getting my license out when I flew.Jotun wrote: ↑Mon Nov 18, 2024 9:24 amThat is not a uniquely Democrat/Liberal problem. I served in Kosovo as an intelligence analyst for five months. What I read about Kosovo, Albania and Albanians in all the dossiers available told me one thing: I would not want to hang on a wall there as a painting.Craiglxviii wrote: ↑Wed Nov 20, 2024 7:46 am… and institutionally the most corrupt country on the Continent. Hey, Jotun....
I assume that it means you'd rather be anywhere but there, but I'd really like to know exactly what it means and where it comes from.
Thanks

Is that a colloquial German phrase?I would not want to hang on a wall there as a painting.

Another one basically in response to the OP. Of course this is going to be judged a-okay by most here because it is for the conservative "cause"...
Elon Musk (future f***ing member of the US f***ing government!) is openly endorsing Nigel Farage and his "Reform" party, allegedly contemplating a "donation" of around 100 million dollars or 80 million British Pounds. So tell me how this isn't worse than some lone political nut from Britain running their mouth in the USA...

Unfortunately, His Majesty's Government forgot that rule.

HMG forgot nothing. I do remember that Conservatives have regularly gone to the USA to support the GOP and Farage has almost spent more time in the US supporting Trump than representing the people who elected him. To Of course, I’m sure that’s all right, though.
Musk has been blatantly interfering in the electoral process of several countries, including the U.K. and ROI. He also evidently thinks he’s co-President elect.

Labour had people involved with Clinton's campaign back in the 90's. Quite influential on them so they said.
I wouldn't be surprised if this has been going on for a lot longer on both sides.
As for very rich businessmen....at that level Politics is interested in them.

You could also say "I would not want to hang across a fence dead over there."
The "painting" saying is a bit less common.
Re: Keep your Marxist A Holes at Home.. PLEASE
Okay. After all the hand wringing, what do you guys say about Elon Musk fucking endorsing the partly neo-Nazi AfD in Germany and JD Vance supporting that X post? Hm? That‘s of course Free Speech and certainly different altogether than some idiot Brit leftie back bencher turning up in the USA to support the Democrats, right?
Just for clarification: Musk is going to be part of the upcoming Trump 47 administration and Vance is the fucking VP elect.
THAT‘s what is called undue political infuence.

From here, I really wish he'd keep his mouth shut and stay out of the affairs of other countries; we've got enough problems on this end.
One question I'd like to ask - and please understand that I'm asking because I don't know the differences between the parties there or the political nuances of Germany as a whole - is what makes AfD considered neo-Nazi? I know they are anti-immigration, but unfortunately that's about it.

The various eastern German State Offices for the Protection of the Constitution, some in the western states and also the Federal Office for the Protection of the Constitution (BfV - Bundesamt für Verfassungsschutz) officially rate several individuals in the party leadership (most prominently Björn Höcke), several state-level party organizations and the entire AfD youth organization as "gesichert rechtsextrem" (gesichert in this context meaning assuredly; the rating is based on objective criteria).MikeKozlowski wrote: ↑Sun Dec 29, 2024 12:38 pmJotun,Jotun wrote: ↑Sun Dec 29, 2024 8:45 am Okay. It needs to be said that BfV and most LfV offices were for the longest time a bit blind in the right eye…they tended to often relativize activities on the extreme Right. So if even they characterize an organization as extreme Right, it means something.

Thank you for the explanation - we don't have anything like the BfV here and the news stories I've seen here don't mention it; they tend to talk about politicians and politics instead of a Federal agency.

Observing things a bit from abroad, one impression I get is that a person to watch very carefully is AfD-associated Naomi Seibt. She strikes me as someone who could potentially have substantial success in building a big following in the future. Young, pretty, well spoken, agitational, and undoubtedly has got a pretty high intelligence (not implying support of her policies). It’s something approaching the perfect recipe for a future high level populist politician. But that’s just my take of course.Jotun wrote: ↑Sun Dec 29, 2024 2:25 pmThe various eastern German State Offices for the Protection of the Constitution, some in the western states and also the Federal Office for the Protection of the Constitution (BfV - Bundesamt für Verfassungsschutz) officially rate several individuals in the party leadership (most prominently Björn Höcke), several state-level party organizations and the entire AfD youth organization as "gesichert rechtsextrem" (gesichert in this context meaning assuredly; the rating is based on objective criteria).MikeKozlowski wrote: ↑Sun Dec 29, 2024 12:38 pmJotun,Jotun wrote: ↑Sun Dec 29, 2024 8:45 am Okay. Thank Jotun. I took 4 years of German in high school, and my dad was virtually fluent, as a result of his parents being fresh off the boat from Bocholt in 1928, so at one point, I knew a lot of German. However, its been a long time since high school, and I've lost a lot of it. Among what I've lost is ALL the colloquial German I once knew, except for the description of a generously endowed woman as having "A lot of wood under the hut".Jotun wrote: ↑Sun Dec 29, 2024 8:40 amIt means exactly that.Belushi TD wrote: ↑Wed Nov 20, 2024 1:29 pm Hey, Jotun....

I love idiomatic language. It tells a lot about the country in question.

Re: Keep your Marxist A Holes at Home.. PLEASE
We have an idiomatic expression in Sweden that is originally borrowed from (low?) German. ”Ont krut förgås inte så lätt”, which literally translates to ”evil gunpowder does not easily perish” and makes no sense when you think about it. The explanation is that the original is roughly ”Unkraut vergeht nicht so leicht” or ”weeds do not easily perish”. It got corrupted along the way due to the word similarity between ”unkraut” and ”ont krut” and we just kept using the now nonsensical saying. Not sure what that says about us as a country.
