Hmm, just been to see this with an Australian libretto, which reveals what a lousy plot it has. Long story short Prince Tamino and his sidekick get two get of jail free cards and use them. Opera Australia have mucked about with the story as well, so it all had a happy clappy ending.
Set was fairly minimalist, singers were mostly good, Sarastro couldn't hack the bass but looked great. A very enjoyable night and a bit of a bargain $59 each to sit in the gods, which with our tiny theatre is no imposition.

Oh shit. Unless you have a world class ensemble of singers and use the German lyrics…just don't!
Especially the aria of the Queen of the Night is a major stumbling block.

Oh Opera Australia is pretty good in general. I agree about the lyrics, I prefer the original language and subtitles. I think this is the first live opera I've seen with translated lyrics.
