U.S.S. Belknap (CG-26) limps back to Norfolk after a hit by an AS-6 ASM from a Backfire, 1986... She was damaged almost similarly after a collision with U.S.S. John F. Kennedy (CV-67) in the Med in 1975. Four years in the yard, recommissioned in 1980... Aluminium superstructures and high heat do not mix...She was repaired, but served only a few years postwar until replaced by a new-build AEGIS ship. Now moored at Patriots Point, NC next to the U.S.S. Yorktown (CV-10).
