How did volcanism trigger climate change before the eruptions started ??

Nik-note:
It's been one of those geological conundrums: Why dire climate 'excursions' seem to pre-date vast flood-basalt events.

Well, at least on land: Underwater out-pourings seem less prone to triggering extinction events...

As I understand it, this report has spotted that big magma may take a long time to work a way to surface.
Meanwhile, it is intruding sills and dykes into the local rock.
And outgassing, much of which finds its way via those sills and dykes to surface.

IIRC, to add insult to injury, 'Permian' event's Siberian Traps intruded such into coal-seams, a 'mega-bake off' ensued before 'lava floods' began...

I seem to recall that the Permian event also intruded into oil fields. Lots of hydrocarbons to contribute to both CO2 and CH4 genesis.

Not sure if that's from one of Stuart's books, or if I'm remembering it from a geology book. Anyone else remember this?

I remember him mentioning that in either a post or an essay on oil fields, as a possible explanation for why the real big oil fields in Siberia hadn't been found until then.
