Deadpool and Wolverine

Post by Micael »

I watched it today, if you like the previous Deadpool movies this is right down the same alley. I really like the Deadpool/Wolverine combo together, and essentially it’s just a nuts ride with all the usual Ryan Reynolds humor, a fair bit of cameo fan service, and some satisfying tying up of the Fox X-Men-verse in some ways.

It may be worth noting that this movie has managed to achieve blockbuster success at the box office, unlike several others recently. So the Hollywood blockbuster may not be so much a thing of the past, as long as the movie is made in a way that actually mobilizes the crowds.

It had an opening weekend of $211 million US domestic, sixth largest of all time. $438 million was the worldwide haul, and both exceeded expectations. It’s now expected to go over $1 billion next week and may thus dethrone Joker as the highest grossing R-rated movie of all time, which made $1.078 billion. I think it’s a well deserved success for Reynolds, Jackman, and the rest.

If someone puts out movie that people want to watch, they will come. Godzilla Minus One 15 million dollars to make, 100 million dollars worldwide box office.

Then you have last year's Barbie and Oppenheimer broke records why, people wanted to see them.

The team behind Deadpool and Wolverine wanted to make the movie their way and fought Disney / Marvel to make their way. It worked.

It is quite demonstrative that the DEI box ticking Disney, Ubisoft (look up the Yasuke disaster, seriously, that is "shooting one's own foot" par excellence...they got the Japanese government on their ass about the newest Assassin's Creed game), Amazon (although they are very undecided, on one hand you have woke shit like Rings of Power and the Witcher series while on the other, there is stuff like The Terminal List and Reacher...) and others are indulging in is a dead end, because obviously the vast majority of people just want good entertainment without the unsubtle attempts at political education that has become so disgustingly ubiquitous in the last decade or so.

Gonna watch the movie with my wife next week.

Gotta ask....

What is woke about the Witcher? My wife convinced me to watch it and while I didn't particularly enjoy the first episode with the sack of Cintra and all the accompanying blood, gore, rape, murder and such that came with the sack of a town in the middle ages, I didn't think it was particularly woke. I have since enjoyed it a fair bit. Took me a couple episodes to figure out the relative time changes between the flashbacks and such, but I'm quite enjoying it at this point.

But seriously, what is the woke part of it, because I don't really see it. Is it the persecution of the elves, or how they start fighting for the people who don't persecute them?

Thanks

Sorry, the first season was great. It all went downhill from there. The prequel series attempt was an absolute dumpster fire.

Henry Cavil kept Witcher good for as long as he could. Once he was gone...

Henry was a fan of the books. When the producers started straying too far, he left.

Yeah, I’ve watched some of the interviews with Reynolds and the others, very enlightening as to how much effort he’s put into this. For instance he managed to get Madonna’s permission to use Like A Prayer in the movie, a song which is usually not licensed, by securing a personal meeting with her at her home and basically pleading on his knees to be allowed to use it.

Ok, so since I'm only about two or three episodes into season 3, its still ok? It doesn't get bad until Cavil leaves?

Good to know.

YMMV, but I'd say all the Cavil episodes are at least worth watching.

The various songs used in the film are also attracting a lot of attention on streaming sites.

I thought I’d expand a bit on what I thought of the movie:

SPOILERS BELOW!

First off I obviously like the basic concept of the film, essentially a roadtrip movie with Deadpool and Wolverine, off to save the world. There are definitely emotional moments interspersed into this trip, though I don’t quite get the same kind of emotional connection as in the previous two Deadpool movies. In the others it was more of a case Wade and Vanessa, and their grief, resurrection, and so forth. In this one the setting up phase is pretty brisk, and even though there’s additions to this later on it doesn’t quite get you going to the same extent. What does get you going is the sheer coolness of all the other bits along the way, such as the fights, the nostalgic appearances, and of course the humor. I really like that Laura/X-23 is back, I hope that this means more appearance in the future as well. Elektra and Blade are pretty cool to have back, Channing Tatum’s Gambit likewise, even though it’s his first appearance on screen. He might pop up more in the future as well. Johnny Storm was surprisingly funny, especially in the context of the end credits scene. Henry Cavill as a variant of Wolvie, neat I guess, but I’m not among those that are hoping for him to get the role full time. I just don’t think that he’s good enough of an actor to properly portray all aspects of the character. I would definitely be up for Hugh’s Logan and Laura to share some more screentime though. Emma Corrin as Cassandra Nova was a good casting as well, worked very well in the role.

I really do like the movie, the over the top fights, the Deadpool corps (”It’s Uzi time baby!”), and the substantial effort they’ve gone through to bring closure to the Fox-verse. The nostalgic reel during the end credits is great. Truly thank you for that, it was needed.

Saw it in an IMAX weekend before last. I really enjoyed it. Laughed a great deal, as well as enjoying the action.

The fight scene between Deadpool and TVA soldiers, in which he used Logan’s skeleton was really well done as well as hilarious!

Just passed the $1 billion mark globally. I hope that the success will aid in pushing Marvel Studios in the right direction going forward.
