Irish Naval Service
Irish Naval Service
Offshore Patrol Vessels.
Emer Class
LÉ Emer (P21)
Note: Was an improved version of the now decommissioned LÉ Deidre (P20)
Improved Emer Class
LÉ Aoife (P22)
LÉ Aisling (P23)
Note: Both ships were constructed once additional EEC funding became available and have been employed on fisheries protection duties. During these duties they became relatively well known (or notorious) after arresting a number of vessels fishing illegally.
Eithne Class
LÉ Eithne (P31)
Note: Largest vessel in Irish service; was the current flagship of the Irish Naval Service and is the only one capable of operating a helicopter. Was the final naval service vessel to be built in Ireland.
Peacock Class
LÉ Orla (P41) (ex-HMS Swift (P243))
LÉ Ciara (P42) (ex-HMS Swallow (P242))
Note: Former Royal Navy vessels sold to the Irish Naval Service after only a few years of service in Hong Kong. Have recently visited Gibraltar and exercised with their three RN sisters.
Róisín Class
LÉ Róisín (P51)
LÉ Niamh (P52)
Note: Large (second largest in the naval service) and powerful class designed to operate in the worst winter weather in the North Atlantic. As of 2005 they are the youngest ships in Irish service.
Future Vessels
Samuel Beckett Class
LÉ Samuel Beckett (P61)
(P62)
(P62)
(P63)
(P64)
Note: The Irish Naval Service is planning a three to four vessel class of new OPVs to replace the Emer Class. These ships will start to be laid down in the early years of the next decade. The choice of name for the lead vessel for the class has been controversial, as although she will be named after a figure from Irish literary history, previously naval service vessels were named after women from Irish mythology. The naval service is also currently considering the procurement of a Multi-Role Vessel similar to the Royal New Zealand Navy’s HMNZS Gallipoli; naval service officers have visited New Zealand to evaluate the ship.
