I almost posted the link and asked how close it was to the game (which I never have played).Jotun wrote: ↑Thu Mar 07, 2024 8:39 pm SQUEEEEEEEEEEEEEE!

I take it you like it?
For some reason, it appeals to me.
Re: Fallout Series
I played every damn Fallout game since the very first one, 27 years ago, except for the abomination that is Fallout 76. I also played Wasteland, its spiritual forebear, 36 years ago. The retro futurism (the stuffiness of the preserved Fifties comes across very strikingly), the alternate history, the whole atmosphere and the wild humor are still one of a kind.jemhouston wrote: ↑Thu Mar 07, 2024 9:06 pmI almost posted the link and asked how close it was to the game (which I never have played).Jotun wrote: ↑Thu Mar 07, 2024 8:39 pm SQUEEEEEEEEEEEEEE!

The Fallout games series was awesome.
There were a few bloopers throughout the games, but to me it remains one of the best computer game series of all time.
Note: Walton Goggins plays a drug-dependent ghoul! Ghouls are people who were irradiated so much when the nukes fell that they were pretty much conserved alive and don‘t age physically. They die just as everybody else does when exposed to kinetic, blade, energy weapons and explosives as everybody else. They are immune to rariation, however (duh).
I hope we see a Deathclaw in action.

We have to see a Deathclaw in action.
Were the German versions watered down? I heard a rumor at the time that certain aspects were nerfed.

Re: Fallout Series
Sone of the splatter effects in the later games were "defused", thanks to our ridiculous youth protection law. Back when games were sold on physical storage media, I always took care to buy the original version. Things have improved a bit in the meantime.Drunknsubmrnr wrote: ↑Fri Mar 08, 2024 5:47 pm We have to see a Deathclaw in action.

Re: Fallout Series
I hope it is good and faithful, I really do. Played every Fallout but Brotherhood of Steel and Fallout Tactics. My favourite is New Vegas, so I hope to see some parts of it in the show.
Going on every other recent adaption up to now, though, that faith is not certain.

Re: Fallout Series
In game related news, the Fallout London total conversion mod for FO4 that's been in the works for several years is only 3 weeks away from it's release date.
Re: Fallout Series
Watched the pilot.
No, it doesn‘t suck. On the contrary, it is just as wacky and awesome and fun as I had hoped.
This has to be the best video game adaptation of all time.
5 out of 5 Stimpaks, will definitely warch the rest!

Re: Fallout Series
I’m halfway through the first episode and concur. 10 out of 10 Garys so far.
Re: Fallout Series
Yes. 4.5 episodes in, and I’m once again yearning to go out and find a water chip again. Or a GECK.

Re: Fallout Series
Concur. Started watching it last night, and it rocks. A very game-style setup, and everybody looks to be having a ball - especially Walton Goggins as The Ghoul* , who is sufficiently evil to make a Sith Lord step back and say, "Dude....."
Mike
*Growing up in Cleveland, in the early 70s we had a very fondly remembered horror movie host called the Ghoul - it was a bit of an effort to not be spouting Ghoul-isms whenever Goggins was on screen.

Re: Fallout Series
I love the writing on this show.
Ass jerky don’t make itself
Re: Fallout Series
I’ve had a chance to watch through all the episodes now. Very good, quite enjoyable. It has a good mix of humor, quirkyness and seriousness. In particular both Ella and Walton does a good job in their respective roles.
Re: Fallout Series
I love it.
On the negative side, there are more than enough idiots on the 'net being butthurt because Shady Sands and the NCR were "retconned" out of existence or at least being as close to wiped out as possible, not having bothered to learn that the series takes place AFTER the events of the games.
And of course, the one transgender character that has all of ten minutes' worth of screen time across three episodes is apparently reason enough to be crybabying and call the entire series "woke" and thus worthy of boycott. Oh well...I am the last guy who needs "THE MESSAGE(tm)", but there is such as thing as being too brittle about things. Oh, and "interracial" (there is no such thing as "race" in humans!) marriages are apparently also "woke".
Sometimes I despair at the idiocy of people.
PS:
Was I the only one marking Kyle McLachlan's character as the Big Bad from the second he turned up, let alone drowned the "groom" in the barrel? Since reaching his Fifties, the actor just oozes shadiness and evil...

Re: Fallout Series
The issue with the NCR is that the fall of Shady Sands is put down as 2276 or 77, when FNV takes place in 2281. A simple enough issue to resolve by just saying that the Vault wasn’t 100% accurate. The related issue of New Vegas looking trashed/sacked in the final scenes is also not necessarily a problem, given the time gap from 2281-2296.
Letting it fester isn’t a great option, but nor is jousting with the fan base. For me, it doesn’t subtract from an excellent series.
Didn’t notice any transsexual stuff, but I wasn’t looking for it.

Re: Fallout Series
Neither was I, but a short haired female-looking person with a thin mustache (the character who had the razor blade in the boot) was something even I picked up on. The BOS tech priest (the correct term escapes me at the moment) even used "they".Simon Darkshade wrote: ↑Mon Apr 15, 2024 7:08 am The issue with the NCR is that the fall of Shady Sands is put down as 2276 or 77, when FNV takes place in 2281. Re: Fallout Series
I wasn’t watching that section with a great deal of attention, as it was obviously just the set up for the BoS squire to get out in the field. Even when I get to rewatching it, from the description you give (which I have no cause to doubt), it won’t be a Fundamental Message Injection of the strength/intensity that makes a show awful. To be honest, the brief shot of the BoS squire engaging in onanism in the crowded barracks in the middle of the day was a bit more jarring.
Compared to The Wheel of Time, Rings of Power and other recent modern dross, this series is in the corner of the angels with the recent Dune films.

Re: Fallout Series
Oh, I absolutely concur, although the guy having a date with Rosy Palm did not even merit a raised eyebrow. My only thought was "There are toilet stalls for that kind of stuff…or at least wait until dark."Simon Darkshade wrote: ↑Mon Apr 15, 2024 7:47 am I wasn’t watching that section with a great deal of attention, as it was obviously just the set up for the BoS squire to get out in the field. Re: Fallout Series
The one thing I find bemusing about Bethesda Fallout’s aesthetic, which has carried over into the show, is how 219 years after The Bomb, things are still completely messed up. Even in settlements in F3 and F4, people just have skeletons lying about in their hovel, along with weeds, rubble and junk. It makes sense for the era of Fallout 76, but seems to be more of an aesthetic choice than a logical outcome. Over two centuries, even in a horrific world, people are going to clean up a bit.
Some of the complaints about the removal of Shady Sands and New Vegas as shown in the show seem to link those occurrences with a ‘Bethesda approach’ of ‘no civilisation’. I don’t quite give that opinion full credence, but we shall see what happens in Season 2. The NCR has collapsed from a functioning multi-state republic with a non-subsistence economy, multiple cities, power supply, trade networks and a large army to being essentially gone in 19 years, which will need some good storytelling.
I’m absolutely willing to give them the benefit of the doubt, like the show and can suspend my disbelief/issues with their world building to see what they do next. My minor issue with the ‘Bethesda aesthetic’ is more a function of what is found in the games than the show thus far.
