I recall hearing the the Brits had to attach military nomenclature experts to US HQs in Normandy to 'translate' British to US military-ese.

Ford used to maintain a list of TOFLAs, which in itself is not on the list. Three Or Four Letter Acronyms.

Ok....

They have "CL" for Light Cruiser (among lots of other definitions) but they don't have CA for Heavy Cruiser, or BB for battleship, but they do have BBSAG for Battleship Surface Action Group.

Nothing for Dreadnaught either.

They have DD/FF for Destroyer/Frigate.

They have CVBG for Aircraft Carrier Battle Group and CV(F) for Future Aircraft Carrier, as well as CVN for Nuclear Powered Aircraft Carrier, and CVS for Antisubmarine Aircraft carrier and even FOAC, for Flag Officer, Aircraft Carrier, but they don't have anything for the conventionally powered carriers that they are operating!

This is an incomplete list.
