Well this didn't go as planned at all.

Post by Bob Dedmon »

At Thanksgiving (U.S.) my wife and I took a planned trip to bring her mother back to the Philippines. Nearly 3 weeks now and this has been the trip from hell, tests/challenges like this I don't need. The trip was done in stages to make it easier on mother in law. DC to LAX was easy and comfortable, note to self in LA check which hotel shuttle you get on...there are several hotels with the same name. Thanksgiving day go to the airport see the check in line and worry until I see the business class check in very easy Nice. They take us to the business class lounge until boarding, about a mile away so it seemed. Board the plane everything is wine and caviar, they cannot do enough for us. Arrival in the PI equally smooth including clearing customs. Arrive at the relatives house daughter #2 ( coming later) informs us the hot water heater has sprung a leak and soaked ceilings on 2 floors and the upstairs rug, Major PITA but I'm working thru it long distance loads of fun (NOT). The following weekend we're to stand in at a wedding, an hour before we leave for the church the local constabulary crash the party and indefinitely postpone the nuptials, causing an indefinite delay for a trip to Cebu to visit a former commrad in arms. Then I eat some bad oysters and think my ass is going to fall off. Then CinC house decides to 1 up me in Bagiuo. We go to her sisters house down on the Luzon plain with the intention for me to go to the Cabanataun PoW site memorial and her mother thinks about checking out for good. She's currently in a hospital in Bagiuo with my wife recovering from covid. My darling spouse is getting next to no sleep keeping watch and I'm in isolation with covid. In my mind I'm saying fuck it lets go home hit the reset button and start this thing all over. Rant over for now.

Bob,

Like I said - if you need an extraction team...let's face it, we could get a serious action/adventure movie team out of this crowd.

On second thought, might not be a good idea. It would end up looking like a cross between the Marx Brothers and The A Team.

Yes. And we'd have MUCH better aim than the A Team.

Not that that's difficult. We'd just use the Board's B-36, and as the saying goes, close enough is good enough with horseshoes, hand grenades, and nuclear weapons.

I will admit that my previous post was not a particularly high bar to reach.

Sorry, my passport has lapsed. And, as that's too old for 'fast-track' renewal, we'd be talking Easter...

Besides, beyond serendipitous quips, my skills are limited to talking about cats, computers and chromatography...

Thanks for the offer of extraction, but I'm too stubborn to let these setbacks ruin this trip...I'm gonna have fun now that I'm retired damnit! Latest update CinC House is diagnosed with covid, and what shops call themselves hobby shops in Bagiuo fail miserably selling only a hand full of Gundms.

Bob,

Brother, you may be missing a point here: half the fun will be getting you out without your knowledge or cooperation. :D

Craig,

Actually I'd pictured myself as a heavily armed Groucho.

OK guys, this is degenerating to a session of Romper Room. Lots of fun to read. Mother in law is stable and slowly recovering, I think I'm over covid, CinC House is currently asleep, she tested positive a couple days ago but we've felt she had it longer than that. We're both committed to getting thru this mess and enjoying out trip to the PI...besides it's in the 70s in Bagiuo and in the low 50s for a high back in Virginia. The other PITA is a couple of our banks have blocked IP addresses from the Philippines making keeping up with some bills a pain.

The fun never ends...first the good. Mother in law is getting stronger and MAY outlive this stay, everyone appears to be in reasonably good health. Now for the fucked up...the reason the the constabulary raiding the wedding was the bride was accused of personal embezzlement, mainly against the FAMILY. Large sums were mis-appropriated. CinC house lost a bundle. 28 December she aledged she was going to work restitution and instead took her daughter and ran. The family is filing several cases against her. My guess on this as she has been accused of this in the past. She scoped out out nephew on a dating site and planned and executed this over the past year. It appears the nephew had no clue on what was happening as when he arrived to be with the family he appeared crushed emotionally...we'll see what happens next. I'm still intending to enjoy this trip to the maximum extent possible.

Well, there's good news about that. The bride that ran was marrying IN to the family and not marrying OUT of the family. Which means that after the arrest is done and any moneys possible recovered, she no longer the family's problem.

The bad news is this was a renewal of vows and a formal ceremony vs. marriage at the mayor's office and right now in the Philippines marriage is still forever without a symphony, and a song and dance. The Catholic church still has it's say in divorce here.

Brother,

Tell me what you're drinking and I'll have a case standing by when you get back. Hold on and hold out the best you can.
