Sal Mercagliano has made a fool of himself in one of his most recent What's Going On With Shipping episodes on YouTube. He claimed that he once "saw" a CVN doing 43 knots!!
Sailed with Military Sealift Command and saw Theodore Roosevelt on a breakaway from my oiler and tracked her with the CAS on our radar.
Maybe the radar was off, but she put the throttles down and was showing 40+ knots.
I pointed out that this would require on the order of at least 661,000 shp or 165,300 shp per shaft. Can you say CAVITATION!!?
I really do wish that mariners like him would think a bit more before repeating nonsense like that. Basic power requirement calculations alone show how utterly ridiculous it is.

I always like the one about "she was so fast we could waterski behind her". A friend of mine was a competitive waterskiing enthusiast. He reckoned a skiier could get up at 11 knots.

It’s also worth noting that a CVN at full chat is the same as the Empire State Building turned on its side whilst breaking the in-town speed limit. One could most certainly waterski behind one, with a long enough rope to avoid the rooster tail!
