Copies of most of the stories in this forum.

Post by Calder »

I have copies of most of the stories that were in this forum. Would it be helpful for me to repost them? My only big issue is I don't know which ones are published and shouldn't be reposted and which ones I am free to do so.

I'm specifically replying to what ones are or aren't published? I would say post all of the stories, and if any then needed to be removed, to then do so.

Easiest way would be to post a list of stories you have, and we can then post which ones are published vs which ones are not.

Were you able to save any of the comments? That’s the real gold.

No, that would have been far too much work at the time. It would have made the stories almost unreadable. I will see what I can do about getting a list of the stories.

Here is the list that I have. I lost winter warriors and a few of the older stories in a move. I have fixed a bunch of spelling and grammar errors in the stories and changed the formatting some so there might be minor differences with the originals.

Decimating the Diodoch was published as "Alexander's Generals". In fact, I can see it from where I'm sitting, so I would VERY strongly recommend we don't repost that one!

I think we are in the clear with reposting the Lords of War series, as per Stuart, the Ukrainian bastard who stuck it up on Bittorrent ruined the copyright for Stuart and muddied the waters sufficiently that there was no possibility of publishing in any normal context.

Kazan Thunderbolts is another one that was published. I did the spellchecking and such on that one. Same thing. Reposting would be.... bad.

Was there another story set in the far future besides Intersteller Highway and Unto the Tenth Generation? I seem to recall that Chewbacca wrote one of those, but I don't remember if it was one of those two or if it was another one. I also seem to recall that Chewbacca ran out of time and muse and never finished his story. Isn't he still occasionally active on one of the other AH sites? Might be worth it to reach out to him to see if he would object to a reposting.

Royal Court was the one Stuart was working on when he died, wasn't it? Same with Spiral of Destruction? Or had he run into serious plot problems, and had abandoned it?

I believe that Drummossie Moor and Home of the Brave were planned to go into dead tree form, and we probably shouldn't repost until we can confirm one way or the other if something is planned for it.

A large number of the detective stories were published in dead tree form, but not all of them. Conrad's Eye, and Conrad's Other Eye were the titles, I think. Something like 6 in each book? Maybe?

I don't think any of the short stories were published, but I could be wrong.

Anyway, this is my understanding of the situation. I'm not a lawyer, so I may not be correct. Don't take what I say here as gospel.

I would suggest if we post these, we post it for members only, just in case.

Assuming there isn't an edit window I guess I can edit the above post and remove them. After a couple of weeks or so I could start posting them. Can the admin bulk post stories? The long stories would take a LOT of work to breakup into individual posts to repost on this site.

Interseller Highway is Stuart's. I think I recall a 2nd story but I don't have it.
Unto the Tenth Generation is Chewbacca. It isn't finished but it is one of my favorites and I hope Chewbacca will come back to it someday and finish it.

Royal court isn't finished. Spiral of Destruction is finished. Did Spiral get published?

Will not do anything with these until hear more.

I suspect it will be easier to list the detective stories that aren't published than to list the ones that are but I don't have any information on those. I THINK none of the Achillea stories were published. I also think some of the "Eye of".

Spiral of Destruction was finished.

What was only partly done (8 or so chapters only) was Tilting the Balance, set sometime after Kazan Thunderbolts. Monty now commands the 356th and they are flying P-80Cs.

Not listed are the two "Division" novellas, Division by Zero and Division by Class, which feature 'Lea mostly.

Craig, if you bought the site as is, including content as alluded to in another thread, then you may have sufficient rights to decide what comes of the rest, though I cannot be certain with US IP law.

Firstly, I remember that Theodore posted both the Decimating the Diodoch and Drummossie Moor on the "Old Board", but they were also registered users only, which Craiglxviii has confirmed can be done, here, as well (limiting access to registered users). I'm not really arguing one way or the other, just pointing out they've been previously posted, in the Forums, even after one, at least, got published.

Secondly, as refers to the "Eye of... Series", I've opened the books on Kindle, and the following are in the books:

overarching book: Conrad's Eye
Eye of the Beholder
Eye of the Deceiver
Eye of the Imposter
Eye of the Pretender

overarching book: Conrad's Other Eye
Eye of the Gambler
Eye of the Marauder
Eye of the Confessor
Eye of the Despoiler
Eye of the Hunter

Then you get into the introduction of Angel, and the following stories in Conrad's Angel
Eye of the Abductor
Eye of the Smuggler
Eye of the Forger
Eye of the Buccaneer
Eye of the Poisoner

As for the other published stories, in the TBO-verse, firstly, I think most of us have bought them, at least on Kindle, like I did. Secondly, since we have the ability to restrict access to registered users, I think those stories, could be reposted, but should be restricted as mentioned above.

Just my two cents here. I have no idea how much money Stuart may have been making from the published works, but doesn't reposting any of Stuart's published stories amount to taking money from his widow?

Spiral of Destruction was in the copy editing phase when the pandemic hit, and so it never advanced to publication.

Stuart pulled the text down when a novel was published, leaving a blank novel post but preserving the commentary.

If we’re able to restore the comment threads, that would be my suggestion - no novel, just our reactions and discussion - for any published works.

Hmmm, I'm surprised I don't have that one.

They are both up there. They are listed under the detective directory.

Is it possible to just restore the old stuff without having to post it all? Posting it will take a LOT of work.

Pretty much yes, which is why I am trying to figure out what has been published first.

If we can just bring back the original threads that would save me a LOT of work. Reposting all of this would take a LONG time. Does the admin have the ability to do that?

The stories in red I don’t have either because they are too old or possibly their name were changed for publication.

overarching book: Conrad's Eye
Eye of the Beholder
Eye of the Deceiver
Eye of the Imposter
Eye of the Pretender

I think these are all older stories I lost in a move. (I lost everything done between Great Game and Winter Warriors.)

overarching book: Conrad's Other Eye
Eye of the Gambler
Eye of the Marauder
Eye of the Confessor
Eye of the Despoiler
Eye of the Hunter

Anyone know if the ones in Red above had a different name before publication?

Then you get into the introduction of Angel, and the following stories in Conrad's Angel
All of these have a strikethrough now.

Of the ones that will be posted, would it perhaps be easier to just post them as attachments (stored locally on the server)? The file sizes don't appear to be burdensome. And they could be zipped up into one or a few files as well. Not sure if the hosting provider supports local uploads, though...

Of the ones that will be posted, would it perhaps be easier to just post them as attachments (stored locally on the server)? The file sizes don't appear to be burdensome. And they could be zipped up into one or a few files as well. Not sure if the hosting provider supports local uploads, though...
Unfortunately it doesn’t support local uploads, we would have to run this through IT support. Not impossible though, just will take a bit of planning.

Sadly, I think I lost Sceptered Isle when my old PC died.
