Danish fisherman René Kloster alerted the country’s authorities after the WW2 German torpedo became entangled in the net several miles off the west coast of the Jutland peninsula on Saturday, July 1, 2023.
René Kloster, captain of the fishing vessel St. Anthony, said that the torpedo was later detonated away from the coast. “It was huge. I have never seen such a big torpedo before. It is quite incomprehensible that such a big one comes up. You just have to catch your breath afterward.”
The torpedo looks like a G7e(TIII)-type electric torpedo used by the German Kriegsmarine submarines in the World War II.
The torpedo had a range of 7,500 m (8,200 yd) and could achieve 56 km/h (30 kn) and a 280 kg (620 lb) warhead with Schießwolle-36 explosive, a mixture of trinitrotoluene (TNT), hexanitrodiphenylamine and aluminium.
Anybody need a Kriegsmarine torpedo?

Well it has been detonated, but still. Kloster was so close to upgrading from fishing boat to torpedo boat.

Refurbish it and give it to the Russians pointed end first.

Well, obviously, but will the new control system manage adequately to compensate for the large shark fin sticking up from mid-body?jemhouston wrote: ↑Thu Aug 10, 2023 7:05 pm Refurbish it and give it to the Russians pointed end first.

If it has a Skull and Cross Bones on it, it should work fine.kdahm wrote: ↑Thu Aug 10, 2023 7:58 pmWell, obviously, but will the new control system manage adequately to compensate for the large shark fin sticking up from mid-body?jemhouston wrote: ↑Thu Aug 10, 2023 7:05 pm Refurbish it and give it to the Russians pointed end first.

What else can they do with it. They can't just drop it over the side. They can't leave it dangling in the water in the net. They can't leave it hanging on the rail in the net. By the time it's up far enough to identify, they pretty much have to swing it aboard. At that point, best to set it down gently and secure it.
There's probably a SOP in place for picking up ordnance in the North Sea. Between mines, torpedoes, and shells, it probably occurs a few times a year.

Yeah it happens. One aspect of it is the dumped chemical warfare munitions that sometimes gets fished up around these parts. Not only have to contend with just the explosive part but also that the thing just spilled out mustard gas agent on the crew and deck.kdahm wrote: ↑Thu Aug 10, 2023 11:08 pmWhat else can they do with it.
