Re: General Discussion thread - FRG Army
Multi part question re. the FRG Army. 1) In @, just what did the old Security Battalions assigned to the Corps Artillery Commands, and in general really, do? And how did they differ from Military Police? 2) I ask #1 above, because I recently learned about the Begleitbatterie (Escort Battery) within ...

Re: The Last War? : Chapter 382
Good chapter!
Refresh my memory, please. The Soviet defector is the one from the airliner that diverted to Diego Garcia?
Nice to see the Belgians get a win.
Keep up the good work!

Re: Royal Navy Order Of Battle
I am beginning to wonder if the concept of using T-8N as refulling aircraft was a mistake. It was an idea I came up with about 20 years ago now ( :o ). One of the issues of operating them on an Invincible class CVSA is that they can't be taken below decks, as they were too large for the deck lifts....

Re: Royal Navy Order Of Battle
Chapter 138 states X9 Sea Harriers in the air group.
Bringing X2 T.8Ns aboard seems to imply sending X2 FA.2s ashore.
I just don't know if the spot factors would allow X8 FA.2s and X2 T.8Ns in addition to the helicopters.

Re: Canadian Armed Forces
IRL I believe Canada only stocked equipment for an additional Armd Sqn, 2xMech Coys and an Arty Bty. If anything else was to be stocked I don’t believe it would have been done until the early 90’s. Canada didn’t have enough Leo 1’s for two full Armd Regts, if the 200 to 250 tanks they were looking ...

Re: Royal Navy ORBAT - Sea Harrier
I did some digging into Sea Harrier FA.2 attrition numbers from @.
Through @ March 2005, thirteen FA.2 were lost.

Re: Canadian Armed Forces
Question. Did Canada stock a POMCUS equivalent for 1st and/or 5th Brigades in Europe, or did those brigades have to ship all their heavy equipment by sea from Canada to Europe? And if they did stock a POMCUS equivalent, how well was it stocked - i.e. about how many battalion sets?

Re: General Discussion thread.
Question that's been stewing in my mind the last few days. It may go somewhere. Once NATO declared a mobilization, they had eight days to get ready before the shooting started. How long would it take to wrangle merchant ships and start getting them where they needed to be? Specifically RO-ROs? I'm t...

Re: Royal Navy Order Of Battle
BEHOLD! British Combat and Support Aircraft BAE Harrier T.8N. * Nine two-seat Harrier T.4s were upgraded to the same standard as the FA.2, albeit lacking the radar, though they had the requisite cockpit instrumentation, and could provide synthetic radar data. To act as a force-multiplier the T.8Ns w...

Re: Royal Navy Order Of Battle
I'd expect more new-builds of the FRS.2/FA/2, simply because of a longer Cold War. Maybe a joint wing of FA.2 and GR.9s, even. But how many more is the question. * The RN has three Invincible class ships. * Each carries up to 22 aircraft. * In @, typical post-Falklands air group was three AEW Sea K...

Re: Royal Navy Order Of Battle
So somebody want to know over at the other place, what the Queen Elizabeth's planned airwing is going to be while operating Sea Harriers and Harrier GR9s prior to the JSF coming into service ? I'll say here what I said there. I suppose that depends on how many Sea Harriers and GR9s survive the war....

Re: Trying to remember a naval fiction we once had on the old old board
I can’t remember the titles. But it was set in this universe/ dimension with the only difference being another island- on which lived a very tough race of people. Who built bloody big battleships, and kept them In service into the 90s… Does this ring any bells? Just seeing this. Based on the "...

Re: Canadian Armed Forces
A-C Squadron have the Leo2s, while D Squadron has the Coyote. Except for the regiment assigned to the SSF, which has two squadrons of tanks and two of Coyotes. As per my answer to the last time you asked earlier in the thread. 😉 Follow-up. So 1st Fort Garry Horse would have four squadrons of Coyote...

Re: The Army cancels the M10 Booker, a ‘light tank’ that was too heavy
I believe the basic armor version of the M8 was airdroppable. They could add more layers depending on the need. Correct. From Wiki - M8 Protection: * The Level I (basic) armor package consisted of ceramic armor tiles[76] and protected the vehicle against small-arms fire and shell splinters. All-aro...

Re: Sentinel ICBM will need mostly new Silos...
FYI - Sentinel is a Northrup-Grumman program. Boeing dropped out of the competition in 2019. For what it's worth, here is an earlier thread about the program started in November 2023 Strategic Weapons: Sentinel Replacing Minuteman... And some links I've collected on the program if anyone is interest...

Re: Sentinel ICBM will need mostly new Silos...
Is there anything saying they must all be silo based? Couldn't we look at road mobile for at least some portion, cause rebuilding every silo is going to be more expensive then whatever they say it's going to be Ten years ago I'd have said sure, let's go mobile. Today? No. If we're not already there...

Re: Sentinel ICBM will need mostly new Silos...
Article from September 2024. Follow some of the links. Basically, they hoped to reuse the communications infrastructure, but it's too old and lacks the necessary bandwidth for modern needs. It seems we're looking at 7,500 miles of cabling. Nobody realized just how bad a shape a lot of the undergroun...

Re: Sentinel ICBM will need mostly new Silos...
....Somebody in a blue suit needs to tell me NOW why we can't use the existing holes. If the missile can't/won't fit, that's Boeing's problem. If the holes can't be used because of their condition then the entire USAF leadership from the CSAF down need to be held responsible. Mike Mike, From what I...
