Re: Heart breaking news (sarc)

Heh. I took violin one miserable summer. Having previously taken 4 years of piano lessons, I was desperate to stop piano and the only way to do so was to take up another instrument. I don't believe I was ever able to make a noise that would be considered music. I then took 2 years of flute and wasn'...

Re: Question about inspection prior to shooting in militaries

I have always been told that dry firing a weapon is a Bad Idea and will result in damage to the firing pin mechanism if done repeatedly. Have I been lied to, or does the Swedish military either replace pins on a regular basis, or is there something else going on that I am not aware of? Thanks Belush...

Yes, all of which are variations of what I said, with the possible exception of the "great earthquake" mentioned. None of which are plate tectonics, again, with the exception of the "great earthquake". BTW, when is it understood that Lake Tanganyika stopped draining north? Also, ...

Re: Found at last: long-lost branch of the Nile that ran by the pyramids

To be fair, that's been long enough for the polar axis to precess, constellations to 'shift', sundry climate changes to have come and gone, and volcanoes etc to have re-arranged drainage of Rift Valley Nile tributaries... You may get carbon-dating: Now the old channel has been identified, core-dril...

Re: Found at last: long-lost branch of the Nile that ran by the pyramids

Uggghhhhh.... Most of the article is pretty interesting and, I hope, accurate. The bit on plate tectonics making the river shift annoys the shit out of me. You need NO plate tectonics to explain meandering rivers, as they tend to do that due to hydraulics and erosional/depositional processes. And, i...

Re: First Aerial View Of B-21 Raider Offers New Insights

I particulary like how the nose is very similar to that of a bird of prey. I'm sure there was something intentional about that, but I'm wondering how much of it was due to "Looks cool!" and how much of it was "evolution figured out how to make bird fast" and taking advantage of i...

Well, poop.

Disappointing on two fronts.

1. Didn't actually happen.

2. I got taken in by a photoshop.

Re: A Historical Photograph, With Commentary...

Agreed. While the development of large scale physical things (planes, trains, automobiles for example) has slowed and gone from revolutionary to evolutionary development, other things such as computers and data management and "invisible" things has increased rapidly. I strongly suspect tha...

Am I wrong in thinking that there's at least three backfires there that are no longer backfires?

I kind of have the feeling that the majority of the crew is "trained" but our protagonist is "Super ultra mega trained" on all the various things we've seen so far. Sort of a hyper-savant, almost.

I have delayed commenting on this because I didn't want to do it in the heat of the moment because I was likely to be less likely to say something.... unfortunate. Having had some time to contemplate, and also return to view it several times, all I can say is "What the f&ck?". For any ...

Hey, welcome back!

We'll not shit on you for your personal politics, only if you argue like a .... well.... unpleasant 4 letter word.

Very glad you found your way back here. If you happen to be in touch with others who have not made it, feel free to try to drag them back in!

Was he wearing rank badges? If so, what were they?

Also - Is it Navy policy to have people who are passengers in the COD wear flight suits?

I'm actually quite interested to know.

Re: Pic of the day

HA!!! Well, for Admiral King, it was 5 stars. Yeah, what I meant was the way the US does "rank badges" for the President. Or lack thereof. The president is almost always in a suit and tie and is almost never in military garb unless visiting the troops overseas somewhere, and then doesn't w...

"That he is."

Helen smiled again. Doesn't mean he can't marry another bride, honey.
Is this the second or third time one of his wives has had a thought about bringing another into the fold?

Re: Pic of the day

Ok, good to know.

I was hoping there would be an insignia specifically for the use of the King. Whatever rank is maximum and with a spiffy extra crown or something.

I think I like that better than the way the US does it.
