Re: A Baker's Dozen...
Ah, the joys of engineering. Sometimes I think there is a special place reserved in Hell for people who come up with the more perverse variations of screw-threads. I am a hobby photographer, once I wanted to make a "soft release", a raised mushroom-topped button that screws into a threaded...

...Well, I have an answer. Corporate IT has blocked it on grounds that we're a hate site. I will see if it's possible to look into this. Mike That’s not very nice! We don’t discriminate! Indeed. Senior heartily dislikes everybody to the left of him politically, regardless of creed or colour.

Mmm, yes, not dissimilar. But I must add that there was a serious lack of actual action during my stint, the Evil Empire recently having collapsed and all that. I think I saw a MiG-25 on my scope once, exactly once. Something with a speed/course vector as long as my willie, anyway.

In case you haven't seen this yet: A really, really impressive kit even if it is just a softskin tank transporter. Well, tank recovery system I suppose, strictly speaking.

Happened in 1982. Two J35F Draken collided during air combat training in the dark. One became inoperable and the pilot ejected safely. The other one was flown back to the base despite some pretty noticeable damage. https://pbs.twimg.com/media/FpqXq7SX0AABIQR?format=jpg&name=medium The image cap...

2022... Lots of sci-fi, nothing really memorable. For 2023 I am gearing up to re-read (for the umpteenth time) the absolutely gorgeous Aubrey-Maturin series by Patrick O'Brian. I had the lot in paperback once but disposed of them a few years ago, now I am going to rebuy them one by one for the Kind...

He was trying to quickly cut across what he thought was a clear bus lane. It's a lesson in never assuming a lane is clear just because you can't see any vehicles in it, or someone signals you across. We hit right front to left front, with him side on to me. Not something I'm going to forget for a w...

I did not know people customized plastic models but come to think of it why not? Is it difficult to fashion parts from plastic? I'd think, being a wood worker, that wooden customization, if done in say box wood and finely sanded would blend well with the original quality plastic hull. Am I reinvent...

Re: Most advanced ancient world weapon the Trireme
The rower layout on trireme is fascinating, somebody put a lot of thought into stuffing max manpower into minimum space. There is a joke in an ancient Greek comedy about the guy on the topmost row farting right into the face of the guy on the bottom row... low humour to be sure, but the audience was...
